Blue badge offenders given criminal record

Two road users in Thurrock have ended up with a criminal record after using a blue badge they were not entitled to use.

On Monday 1 April, separate hearings at Basildon Magistrates Court saw Chris Morrison, previously of Campsey Road, Dagenham, and Naeem Khalid of Ruskin Road, Grays, plead guilty to displaying blue disability badges that were not theirs.

Thurrock Council's Counter Fraud and Investigation Department (CFID) was alerted to Morrison's offence by parking officials, and to Khalid's offence by civil enforcement officers. Both investigations lead to prosecution after each offender was found to be using a blue badge that had been issued to a family member.

Morrison received a £600 fine, £150 costs, £60 victim surcharge (£810 total) and a criminal record. Khalid, an unemployed student, received a £80 fine, £150 costs, £30 victim surcharge (£260 total) and a criminal record.
