Damien Lewis

Yet another star is assured to us as being the next Bond. But is this one's chances fading?

Damien Lewis is one of those film stars who seems to be some way off the A-list of celebrity but yet a familiar face to us all.
Damien has been a central figure in a strong body of work going back to 1997 when he made his film debut with Pierce Brosnan in Robinson Crusoe, coincidently it was while filming this that Pierce got the Bond gig. But Damien Lewis has been in TV, film and stage for so long now that how he has managed to not become a shallowly regarded "celebrity" is a tribute to his ability to be about the work and not the red carpet. His first hint of being a potential Bond could have been said to have been in the film "Storm Breaker" with Ewan McGregor back in 2006; but this is a guy who came up through RADA and doing Shakespeare, in short he is a "proper" actor; so what was he doing turning up on "Have I got news for you" is a wonder.
Born in St Johns Wood to Welsh parents who all had very regal connections (his parents were wealthy city traders, grandfather a Mayor) and he himself educated Eton College, he had the blue blood connection and up-bringing that doubtless he is able to evoke to play a Bond as a man of means. Back in September 2015 the press were all but stopping short of announcing him as Craig's successor but now that talk seems to have cooled showing just how much page filling speculation gets branded around in those moments.
One thing that can be said about Bond is that whoever seems to a likely candidate usually has done a very Bond-type role in the year leading up to a new film and vacant role coming up (think Craig in Layer Cake- or Brosnan in Remington Steel and this gives you an idea of the importance) Idris Elba just did Bastille Day, Lewis is currently staring in "Billions" and was of course in "Homeland" both roles designed to show them moving in a certain way and with a certain look. So will Lewis get the Nod? One suspects not, he's already 45 and he would be pushing 50 by the time the next Bond film would be scheduled for release, same for Elba btw, the Barbara Broccoli is a women who likes to get a good 10 years out of their latest Bond so that could well rule them both out, but Lewis is a star who could turn his hand to almost any role and come out on top. Billions (in which he plays a dodgy hedge fund manager) started last month – it's a glamorous role in a glamorous setting that will only increase speculation for him as the new JB. But alas we suspect time will not permit this.
