Chalkwell beach is only 30 min drive from Grays heading towards Southend. Its charm is actually not being Southend as it is far less crowded and commercialised with taky beach clutter that seems to define southend. Instead it's quiet and relaxed, and its long sandy beaches are as good as any in the country. It feels much better however when the tide is in as this exsentuates the sandiness of beaches, check when the tides are in on Thames tides for the best time to go.
