This is a bit of a hike from Grays. You have to be in the mood for a full day out on this location as its all the way over in Richmond (but we did it on a Sunday in little over an hour and 10 mins) so it's not too bad. Well first thing to say is you are entering one of the best preserved stately homes you have ever seen. It looks like it's still lived in which in this context is quite a compliment as these places can sometimes feel a little too empty when visiting. Some rooms are empty but that's fine as you still need to feel a sense of space as well. If you're a fan of the Nanny McPhee movies the sequel (with Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rhys Evans) was filmed here but I digress, it's a 17th Century Marble manor of modest splendour in that it's not actually that big as these things go. Rather shadily acquired by countess Henrietta of Suffolk (Henrieta Howard) for being nothing more than the Mistress of King George II, this can seem to underline a certain injustice to me that people back then could inherit wealth and status for just being the Kings "bit on the side" but then it is very good of the English heritage foundation to come clean on this.
The bonus of this place is once done you find yourself in a town as agreeable and pleasant as Richmond. And if that's not enough for you the park is but 5 mins drive a way.
