The closest you can get to the sea without actually driving to Clacton or Brighton. It’s still officially on the Thames and the tides certainly make it feel so but Shoeburyness is the beach, and its free of commercial clutter making it quite a unique beach experience for Essex. The local council have rather enterprisingly set up Bar B Q areas so visitors can cook themselves a movable feast. And the fields next to the beach make it excellent play area for children or anyone with a ball. Surprisingly neglected of visitors in favour or South end but this area thrives on NOT being Southend. Just 45 minutes’ drive from Grays but check the tides because when the tide is out there no water at-all in this place.
