Tilbury Fort protected London from the 16th century through to the Second World War.
Its only about 3 miles from Grays Town centre and it can be great family day out. Boys will for sure enjoy playing on the various Artillery Cannons on display that represent the armament of each era from 16th century to the 1940s.
Adults can sit down on the benches and take it the well-manicured green lawns that carpet this site.
Additionally there are quite stunning views of the River Thames all along and high fort walls that also offer fine views of Gravesend in Kent on the opposite bank.
It's part of the English-Heritage organisation. Monday and Tuesday - closed. All other days - open 10am-5pm.
