Thug sentenced for assault on Thurrock Council officer

A thug who spat in the face of a Thurrock Council Environmental Enforcement officer as she went about her duty has been sentenced to 120 hours community service and ordered to pay £805 in fines, victim surcharge and costs.   The appalling incident took place on 13 September, 2018 in Russell Road, Tilbury, when Barron Appleton, of Adelaide Road, Tilbury, approached the officer as she was dealing with an abandoned vehicle. He launched a cowardly attack shouting abuse and threatening the officer before spitting in her face three times. Even after the officer had locked herself in her vehicle he continued his attack, shouting as he tried to open the door to get to her.   Appleton was found guilty of assault and using threatening behaviour when he appeared at Basildon Magistrates Court on Friday, 29 March. He is currently serving a suspended sentence which will be looked at by the Crown Court in light of this conviction.   Thurrock Council will always take the strongest possible action against anyone who threatens or assaults a member of its staff.
